Why our shampoo?

With so many dog shampoos on the market we didn’t want to join the fray unless we had a shampoo so superior, we had to offer it. And we finally do.

We started with the idea that dogs lick. Even if they don't lick all day, humans never lick their heads! What you can put into human shampoo would not necessarily be the best thing in dog shampoo, so we spent a lot of time studying all the possible ingredients for shampoo.

We ended up with a blend that was developed for human infants and facial wash. The cleanser we use makes private label cleansers for dermatologists offices, and sells for many times more money than we are charging for our shampoo.

We took this base, the mildest in the world, then added plant extracts that benefit hair and skin. After all, you wash the fur, but under that fur is skin... and that skin and fur covers the entire dog. No one blends dog shampoos with the finest surfactant but we did. Of course, it's also naturally, not chemically tearless, with the pH of water.

Some things to note:

Our shampoo FEELS different in use. It does not coat fur with residues The shine you see is from the glow of healthy fur, and not a chemical layer. It does not foam as strongly as other shampoos either, because of the natural surfactant, and it rinses cleaner. Because of this, you would use less of it. Fur and skin will feel 'lighter' to the touch once dry, and please try it without conditioner, even on human hair, the botanicals make a huge difference, and we used the best ingredients generously!

Why essential oils?

Most people think essential oils smell medicinal. Synthetics usually smell more pleasing, which is why they're so widely used. Beyond scent, essential oils are used in aromatherapy and they have the ability to subtly alter how people feel. For thousands of years, the only medicines people had were plant based, often the same plants that essential oils are made from.

Essential oils are very strong plant derivatives, distilled from the plant. There’s no chemicals, and no chemical process involved in the essential oils in our ingredients. This means that in using them, they impart whatever benefit the plant imparts. We chose to use them for most of our line (except for Oatmeal Milk and Honey for those whom REALLY don’t like the real thing), because they are simply better, and of course, completely natural.

Most importantly, dogs prefer organic scents. What smells just amazing to you may smell terrible to a dog. If you can smell it, your dog can really smell it... dogs have 25x more scent receptors than humans do. Dogs can detect synthetics, chemicals humans cannot sense. There's no question, after letting dogs sniff the scent options, that they prefer essential oils over synthetic fragrance oils. The real thing is just better.

Out of the bottle, the essential oils smell concentrated. Your dog will not like this concentration. After rinsing, due to the plant properties of essential oils, the scent will be far lighter and even less than chemical fragrances, he will love this!

Why not handmade soap for dog shampoo?

After all, isn’t that what ZenSoaps is about? We specialize in handmade soaps, that’s right. We could make a shampoo bar or a pet bar. But hair and fur, unlike skin, is not alive. Skin recovers from pH changes very quickly, while hair does not.

Real soap has a high pH, the average is 10.5. While this is fine for living skin, which can readjust pH in minutes, hair or fur can't, it's not alive.

High pH forces the shaft of hair to open up, and weakens the hydrogen and ionic bonds holding the shaft together. Unless it’s curly hair/fur, the fur simply gets duller and duller, while salts from hard water settle into the opened up cones of the hair shafts, damaging the hair.

The solution of course is an acidic rinse. But that just adds another step to washing hair or fur, and it's not safer or milder than our shampoo. Also, acid stings eyes. That's why we developed dog shampoo this way. It's better in every way for hair and fur.

Our shampoo works on shiny sleek fur, as well as curly fluffy fur. It is pH balanced the same as water, your dog can safely lick it, and it creates and maintains a beautiful coat without excess drying of his fur. Because it doesn't contain chemical additives, it will not develop any kind of buildup to weigh the coat down. It cleans, which is what shampoo is for. And of course, our shampoo is totally tearless, it's more gentle than baby shampoo.

Does it feel different in use?

Yes! This is an incredibly mild formulation that you can even feel. It will not sting eyes, and is thick enough not to run off the dog's hair when applied.

Because of the unique vegetable surfactants we use, there are fewer bubbles (a problem when rinsing heavier coated dogs), yet it rinses very clean and easily.

We wanted to produce a formula that was lickable for dogs, and contained natural, plant derived ingredients. Your dog's hair will be clean, naturally clean, fluffy, shiny, and more bouyant and bouncy!. Real fur is beautiful.

Does the scent last as long as other shampoos?

Our Essential oil formulas do not. Essential oils are volatile plant essences, distilled from the plant. While they do not evaporate, they are natural, so they absorb into the skin or coat. A truly natural shampoo does not coat fur for the scent to stick to and smell for hours, your dog will smell fresh and clean, but not perfumed.

The scent starts out stronger in the bottle, but after rinsing, it will be a very soft scent that will please your dog tremendously!

Does the shampoo condition?

Absolutely, from the botanical extracts and natural essential oils it contains. Does it feel like a conditioner? Yes, our shampoo helps to 'condition' the coat as well, without stripping all his natural oils.

Our shampoo will rinse clean, and his coat will 'feel' lighter to him (and you, when you run your hands thru it once dry).

My dog licks MORE with your shampoo than before with his other shampoo!

Well yes. He likes the smells. The best way to explain this would be to try to put yourself in your pet's position. Your dog has a sharper nose than you do, 25x sharper. He can detect odors you cannot smell. The odors you can smell he smells more strongly, and with more depth. He will notice all the chemicals in a chemical fragrance. He will notice all the nuances and depth of a plant essential oil.

If every few weeks of your entire life, you were coated with a substance that did not smell good to you, and one day, you are coated with something that smells WONDERFUL to you, how would you react? Dogs lick what they like. If they love how they smell, they will lick it. In a few washings, when he realizes that it's not a one time special experience and he can enjoy it again, he will become more used to it. However, he will probably want to be bathed more often, because bathtime will become a treat, instead of a chore, he will smell good... to him!

Our shampoo may not be like other shampoos... but your dog will love it and be happier. You will love it, because you love your dog.

My dog is particularly smelly, does your shampoo remove all the odor?

Our shampoo contains a remarkable nontoxic deodorizer, that is used by veterinarians to remove even skunk odors, and safe enough to splash directly in human eyes and mouths (which often happens to vets when they degland skunks). While we do not include the concentration to remove skunk, we are very confident that it will clean and eliminate odors from just about the stinkiest your dog will get.

Our goal was to create a shampoo that was natural, effective and completely unlike any dog shampoo on the market. And we have achieved that. Our entire family uses this shampoo on ourselves, that's how comfortable we are with the mildness and quality. We could not think of a formula on the market that we would prefer to use for humans, we are confident you will really love this for your dog.
